Codex HOW TO PLAY Karma & Reputation

Karma & Reputation

Two things decide how the world meets you: your karma, and your name among each people.

KARMA

Karma is the measure of your deeds, and every people can read it. You begin Neutral. It falls when you kill people (the defenceless cost the most, fighters little), when you steal on a people's land, take their beasts or carts, rob their dead or harm their tame beasts, when you eat human flesh, and when you murder another player who was not out for your blood (see CRIME). It rises when you bury the dead, free the Arken's thralls or the Wuf'Gar's captives, defend someone who cannot fight, heal a follower, raise the dead with a Shaman's art, and through quests. It never fades on its own.

From worst to best: Villainous, Wicked, Callous, Neutral, Decent, Good, Virtuous. Sink to Villainous and a bounty is set on your head: any player outside your clan who kills you collects it, and hired hunters come looking for you (see CRIME).

REPUTATION

Each people also keeps its own opinion of you, shown on the Character screen (F2). Your own Oom'Gar begin Friendly, the Kun'Gar and Tul'Gar Liked, the Teshari Neutral; the Wuf'Gar, Arken and Throg'Gar hate you from the start, and the Hiss'Gar always will.

Your name falls when you kill a people's own, and when they see you commit a crime. It rises through trade with their vendors, defending their people, burying their dead, freeing captives, gifts to their leaders (see GIFTS) and quests. Old grudges cool slowly with time, but only so far.

From worst to best: Hated, Hostile, Disliked, Neutral, Liked, Friendly, Honored. Hated or Hostile, they attack you on sight and will not trade with you; Disliked, they trade at a poor rate. From Liked upward their prices grow kinder, and Friendly or Honored, they treat you as one of their own: their fighters may spare you, and at Honored they join your fights. Once your name has fallen to Hostile or worse through your deeds against them, their vendors will take a blood price to set it back to Disliked; a name dragged down by bad karma alone is not for sale. Your own Oom'Gar never hunt you for your name alone.

HOW THEY MIX

Each people weighs your karma into its opinion. The Tul'Gar weigh it most; the Oom'Gar, Kun'Gar and Teshari a fair amount; the Arken little; the Throg'Gar and Hiss'Gar not at all. The Wuf'Gar weigh it backwards: cruelty raises you in their eyes.

KINSLAYING

Strike one of your own Oom'Gar and you are branded an OUTLAW: every people turns on you until eight seconds after your last blow against your own (see CRIME).
